I think its important to remember that we all develop certain traits as a direct result of the family dynamics at play during our childhood, and birth order is only one of the variables that influence those dynamics. I recently published a book on middle children, and in conversation people are invariably astonished by the unexpected insights into this "overlooked" birth order, while also citing examples of middles they know who don't fit our new interpretation of this stereotype. Bottom line is--we can definitely gain useful insights on personality by looking at birth order, but we won't be getting a one-size-fits-all solution to the mystery of why we do what we do and how we became who we are.
